The Blue Mosque, officially named Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Turkish: Sultanahmet Camii), is one of the most iconic and beautiful mosques in the world, located in the heart of Istanbul’s historic peninsula in the Sultanahmet district.

- Built: 1609–1617 (completed in just 7 years)
- Architect: Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa (student of the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan)
- Commissioned by: Sultan Ahmed I (at the young age of 19)
- Name “Blue Mosque”: Comes from the more than 20,000 handmade blue Iznik tiles that dominate the interior walls, giving it a stunning blue hue when light filters through the windows.
Architectural Highlights
- Six minarets: Very rare for its time (originally caused controversy because only Mecca’s mosque had six; the issue was resolved by adding a seventh minaret to Mecca)
- Five main domes and eight secondary domes in a cascading design
- Over 260 windows (originally stained glass, many now replaced) that flood the interior with natural light
- Massive courtyard – one of the largest of any Ottoman mosque
- Interior decorated with:
- Hand-painted blue, green, and white İznik tiles with tulip, carnation, and cypress motifs
- Calligraphy by Seyyid Kasim Gubari
- Low-hanging chandeliers

- First Step Inside – The “Wow” Moment : As soon as you enter the prayer hall, look straight up and around: the explosion of more than 20,000 hand-painted blue İznik tiles and the huge dome 43 m (141 ft) high create one of the most breathtaking interiors in the world.
- The Sea of Blue Tiles: The upper levels are covered in blue, turquoise, and green floral tiles (tulips, carnations, cypresses). The closer you look, the more intricate the patterns become – no two tiles are identical.
- The Mihrab & Minbar: Beautiful marble mihrab (niche showing direction of Mecca) with a black stone from the Kaaba embedded in it, and the elegant marble minbar (pulpit).
- The Royal Loge (Hünkâr Mahfili): Elevated private area for the sultan – ornate wooden balcony supported by marble columns (you can see it from below).
- Night Illumination: After sunset the mosque is bathed in blue floodlights – one of Istanbul’s most photogenic sights. Best viewed from the Sultanahmet Park between Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.
- Low-Hanging Chandeliers: Hundreds of glass oil lamps (now electric) hang just above head height, giving the interior its intimate, warm feeling despite the huge scale.
